Liz Overbo is the Minnesota GreenCorps Member serving the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial School District. Minnesota GreenCorps is an AmeriCorps program that blends government resources with civic engagement as a means to encourage community action. The goal is to reduce waste, save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve water and air quality. Liz’s service will mainly focus on energy efficiency and conservation.
Liz, originally from Fargo ND, moved to Mankato in September shortly before the start of her service in Lake Crystal. She recently completed her Bachelors of Science in Sustainability with an emphasis in Energy and minors in Physics and Geoscience from MSU, Moorhead. During her undergrad, she served as the secretary of the Sustainable Students Association, a student organization dedicated to environmental education and outreach. She was also active in the Society of Physics Students, another student outreach group, as well as tutoring and assisting in college lab classes.
Her current energy projects include exploring LED’s for replacement lighting, utilizing daylight where applicable, and developing a survey to understand behavior around employee energy use. In collaboration with staff, she will be educating students on the importance of separating waste to encourage proper compost and recycling use.
