WHAT IS PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviors and meeting the needs of ALL students.  This school-wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn.

The foundation of PBIS at LCWM is the three building-wide expectations:

· Be Respectful

· Be Responsible

· Be Safe

In addition to our behavior expectations, PBIS has other components to help everyone to take a more positive approach.  Such as a Behavior matrix, Direct teaching of the expectations, PBIS Noble Knight Slips, Sub Club Slips and Check in/Check out sheets.

Behavior Matrix

The behavior matrix is a detailed description of expected behavior in each setting of the school. For example, in the Cafeteria it is respectful to say “please” and “thank you.” It is responsible to clean your space. The matrix will be posted in classrooms and around the school.

Expectations

Throughout the school year, students will be taught how to behave according to the three expectations. Teachers will help students learn what the expectations “look” and “sound” like in every setting during the school day. These lessons will be re-taught and reinforced throughout the school year, and become a regular part of our instructional program.

PBIS Noble Knight Slips

Acknowledging and reinforcing positive behavior is one of the best ways to change inappropriate behavior and encourage appropriate behavior. At LCWM each student has opportunities to earn Noble Knight slips by meeting behavior expectations.  Noble Knight slips are placed in bags located in main hallway and students are drawn on a weekly basis for prizes.

PBIS Sub Club Slips

To help us congratulate those students following the matrix when there is a substitute teacher in a classroom, substitutes are given Sub Club Slips to hand out to students following the expectations.  Students may drop off those slips into the Sub Club bag for a chance to enjoy pizza at the monthly Sub Club Luncheon.

Check in/Check out Sheets

Even with clear expectations and positive reinforcement, sometimes children will misbehave. To address inappropriate behavior, a CICO sheet has been implemented.  Students on CICO will check in an out of each classroom rotation.  Ex. Music Phy Ed., etc.

 PBIS FUN DAYS

Throughout the year the PBIS team hosts four fun days.  The fun days provide opportunities for all students to come together as a community and celebrate their accomplishments..

 PBIS ASSEMBLIES

Once a month the PBIS team hosts an assembly for all students.  Announced at the assemblies are: Sub Club winners, Sportsmanship winners, growth of individual students and classrooms  and much more.
